As I’ve been saying recently, parts have been bought. Not much action has really occurred unless you count the endless hours chasing bits and pieces, or sanding and prepping some of the rusty bits on the shell. That update can wait though, as I finally took some better pics of a few parts that have been laying around.
As you can see in the above pic, I ordered some parts to start rebuilding my original, numbers matching SR20det after a section of the land between the compression rings separated on cylinder three. This gave me a dry cylinder compression of roughly 120-110-80-110 (several years ago, from memory) on cylinders 1 to 4 respectively.
Now, as I mentioned, these parts have been laying around. As you can see in the first pic, there is a decent amount of dust on all the parts in frame. This is because the original machining of the block was not up to scratch. I measured the block myself, and (again, terrible with the figures) I managed to find the following
1. The cylinders were not completed with the appropriate tolerances for each piston individually
2. The cross hatch was too shallow and would have been destroyed within 5000km (about 10 degrees off horizontal)
3. The main bore caps were stretched and out of Nissan rebuild guidelines by 2thou (not much, but enough to warrant a quick touch up)
4. The crank was linished, but there still remained some slight scoring on a big end face
Not really trusting my own judgement, I took it elsewhere for a second opinion. This machine shop agreed, so the whole lot went back to the first shop to be inspected and repaired. The owner agreed that the work wasn’t up to his personal standards, and agreed to repair the work free of charge. Cheering. I haven’t checked the tolerances again yet, but the cross hatch is now on point and the main caps and crank have had a touch up. I’m just super nervous about the piston to bore clearance. Might have to get it double checked when I get around to it.
Now I haven’t measured it again as this debacle was going on for a decent length of time (free repair work, my being out of town and needing to borrow a torque plate each time for measuring/machining) so instead of waiting, I bought a new (used) engine.
This donk came out of a mates r32 and was running well at the time. It has sat in his shed for a little while (and now mine too), but after pulling the rocker cover for an inspection, I am so glad that I bought this one. The block itself has under 100,000kms from new, and the head was rebuilt in the last 20,000kms using all BC gear. 26x degree cams for intake and exhaust, new valve springs, retainers and adjustable cam gears. The head gasket was replaced at this time with a 7 layer MLS item from Apexi. Unknown branded rocker arm stoppers are in the engine to stop the dreaded rocker float at high rpm.
As I’m building this car for the occasional bit of track work, I’m taking the precaution of installing an oil cooler. This meant relocating the filter block and replacing the standard item with one from TAARKS. I’ve blocked the vvl port as I have no interest in spending the kind of $$$ required to build an SR20VET when I could fit an RB26 and be much happier. To go with the block, I purchased a GKTech Filter Block. This would mean fitting an in-line thermostat for the cooler core which I’m not overly keen on. So this piece will be up for sale soon, to be replaced with a GREX item.
While the Filter relocation was for track work, the rock cover was to clean up the bay. I bought this used from a guy in Brisbane who cuts and smooths the original rocker cover, before fitting -10 AN fittings for breathers. It looks so much better in person compared to the factory cover. Not sure how I feel about the crinkle coat, but it can stay that way for now. Might have to re-invent the baffles if the current setup doesn’t work.
While the cover was being changed, I fit a new gasket, new shiny stainless steel dome nuts and replaced the horrible alloy pulleys with freshly painted standard items. All of the auxiliary brakes have been stripped off the block, sand blasted and painted gloss black at Proximity just to freshen up the bay a little. All the heater hoses are going to be replaced to prevent a headache once the engine goes back in, as will the water pump.
A GKTech Coolant Neck Spacer has been fit to the engine before I bought it, meaning I won’t have to drill and tap the neck or fit a spacer in the hose. Much cleaner look for the heater system.
GKTech have also supplied a replacement coolant overflow bottle that will be used, extended wheel nuts that will be a temporary fixture until I get the SSR’s finished, a magnetic sump plug, braided brake lines that will probably be sold so I can buy a different colour, an over the radiator catch can that is for sale so I can buy a suitable replacement to go with the rocker cover, and a few smaller parts that will show up when I find them.
Memorabilia on the shed wall. The front bar was off the first car I ever owned, an ’89 r32 GTS-T, as was the MOMO steering wheel. While the wheel is nice to look at; it really is too small for use on most cars. These days I’m more of a Nardi/Grip Royal for track work and standard wheel for street kind of guy. The Nardi came out of my A31, and the Snap-On clock was a freebie after spending way too much money on the local truck.
This is just some of the shambles I managed to pull out of the car. I bought it minus the stereo, but the guy removing it must not have needed the cables. The (not working) ABS module, damaged lines and some of the wiring have also been turfed in favour of a clean bay where everything works.
Whoever installed these must have missed a TAFE module or two, as Scotch Lock clips and terrible soldering does not really fly with me. The above is the effort made for the Drivers Side indicator installed in the guard. The passenger’s side was cut at the plug (not enough exposed wire to solder, going to have to re-terminate) and the wire broken into using the same style Scotch lock.
This mess is for one of the Power FC sensors. While I haven’t worked out exactly how I’m going to terminate these, it certainly won’t be quite so rancid.
Finally got a creeper that isn’t Randy.
And started to find some bungs to suit the holes as a temporary (probably a couple of years) measure before I start filling/smoothing/shaving the bay.
New door cards as the old blue material wasn’t doing it for me. They’re in pretty good condition, but need a clean desperately. I re-used my door pockets as they were in better condition than the ones supplied with the cards.
When I installed the ICE, front speakers were a must. Rather than timber, I figured I might try something a little more durable. $2 chopping boards and some insertion rubber to prevent vibration. They look the goods installed. More on that later.
No wiring left under the dash. It all came out with the fuse box relocation.
New ICE setup. Pioneer head unit, Aerial switch, Pivot RHU-M, APEXi Turbo timer and to clean up the dash a little more, I moved Power FC Hand Commander into the centre console.
Everything in this car needs a clean desperately. But that won’t happen until the wiring is finished… Long time yet…
Made a bracket to mount the number plate out of some scrap aluminium I had lying around just so I didn’t have to drill more holes in the plate itself.
I realise they don’t make sense, and no they don’t say silver. SIL-Bee-aRgh. Most times I’ve heard someone who learnt Japanese as their first language pronouncing the letter ‘V’ they would run into trouble and Silvia usually sounds this way (in my opinion).
New Koyo Radiator. Will probably be selling this new as it isn’t any thicker than the factory item (miscommunication with an American seller, so no refunds – makes me a sad panda).
I kept my standard Sumitomo brakes off the 32 when I stripped it, to be used for the 180. They have been stripped, blasted and sent for powder coating in a gloss black with a silver flake (you might have noticed a bit of a theme by now). Only a few items on this car are going to be something other than silver, grey and black, and I’m going to make sure they can be easily changed out.
